in which I strive not to be a knave

Pay it forward. I do this sometimes at the drive-thru window at Starbucks; I pay for my coffee and then pay for the car behind me. It's especially fun if I can linger a moment to watch the lucky person flounder a bit and put away money when told that his or her order has been paid for already.
"I do not pretend to give such a Sum; I only lend it to you. When you [...] meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation, when he shall be able, and shall meet with another opportunity. I hope it may thus go thro' many hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop its Progress. This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money." -- Benjamin Franklin

There is a Pay It Forward string going through Blogland. Natalie posted about it last week and I was lucky enough to get in on her PIF. Now here's your chance to get in on mine:

I will send a handmade gift to the first 3 people who leave a comment on my blog requesting to join this PIF exchange. I don’t know what that gift will be yet and you may not receive it tomorrow or next week, but you will receive it within 365 days, that is my promise! The only thing you have to do in return is pay it forward by making the same promise on your blog.

Oh yay, am I too late to play along?

Actually, I'm here with another motive (though I'm glad to have found your blog). I am trying to master the short-row heel on socks and keep coming up with this ugly hole when I join into the round. You can see the hole in all its glory over on my blog. Leslie commented that she thought you mentioned a remedy on your blog about this problem. I couldn't find the post but I thought I'd ask... If you have no idea what I'm talking about, just disregard this blabbering! ;-)
